Dexter’s Online Presence:
This is a class assignment where a student is randomly given the name of another student in the class to research online. The goal is to see what online presence the other has, and if it expresses a positive image.
The student given to me was Dexter Summers. Dexter’s online presence is a positive one. A simple search of with Dexter’s name brought up his athletic track and field profile. Dexter’s profile also lists his home city, last college, high school, current academic year, and birth date. Dexter is from Las Vegas, Nevada where he attended Western High school. Born in Feb. 10, 1989, he attended Southern Utah University before coming to Utah State University. Dexter’s academic emphasis is also listed underneath his profile, he is a journalism major with minors in gender studies and sociology.
Athlete Profile
Continued Google searching of just Dexter’s name show his athletic records and sprint times in different college track events. He is found on several sites that list his 200 and 400 meter run times, the times are not consistent from site to site. However some of the information found is somewhat outdated. I found records dating as far back as 2007 in a Lumberjack Invitational and the Mountain Ts Invitational. Dexter’s 2009 season records are listed as 23.45 seconds for the 200 meter and 52.25 for the 400 meter. The best times I found from the sites were 23.10 seconds for the 200 meter and 52.25 for the 400 meter.

Dexter is also found as an author of several online articles on the Hard News Café in the Arts and Life section. One article in particular titled “Learning while Black: the USU Experience,” discusses the perspective of a black student at Utah State University. The article mentions that since many black students arrive at USU as an athlete, this leads to a stereotype of black students as football or basketball players.

Another article in the Hard News Café mentions Dexter not as an author, but quotes him as the President of the USU Black Student Union. The article showcases a soul food dinner event during February hosted by the Black Student Union. The event had musician Amir Jackson, and plenty of soul food. In the article Dexter was quoted to say, “When you have a majority of one culture here at USU, sometimes you forget to embrace minorities’ cultures.”
Soul Food Dinner
This article cites Dexter as the President of the Black Student Union. A Google search using his name and the Black Student Union brings up USU’s BSU blog. Four pictures are found here, I couldn’t enlarge them enough to see if Dexter was in any of them.
Black Student Union
Further search finds Dexter as the Treasurer of the Black Student Alliance at SUU. This is listed on the SUU Black Student Union webpage. I could not find any dates on the page, but assumed it was outdated.
Black Student Alliance
Dexter has a Facebook account, but has not yet added me as a friend. YouTube shows nothing on Dexter, and neither does LinkedIn. I searched briefly for criminal records, but did not want to pay. I couldn't find any "dirt" on Dexter.
